5 Best Apps For Detecting EMFs – And What You Should Use Instead
I recently received an email from a reader asking me what the best app for detecting and measuring EMF radiation was. To be honest, I was kind of baffled by the counter-intuitive question. Why would you want to measure EMF radiation with a device that emits so much EMF radiation?
However, after researching the topic a bit, I discovered that there are a few valid cases in which measuring or detecting EMFs with your smartphone or iPhone might be worth it.
In this article, I want to start by talking about why you might want an EMF meter. Next, I want to talk first about what EMF meter and detector apps are, and how your cell phone is capable of becoming one.
I also want to talk a little bit about why this might not be a good idea, and why simply purchasing a real EMF meter is a better choice for almost all situations. Finally, we’ll outline what the 5 best apps are if you do choose to use your phone to measure EMF radiation.
Let’s get right into it.
Why Would You Want an EMF Detector App?
Let’s just answer the bigger question first, of why would you want an EMF meter at all? If you’ve read pretty much any of the posts here on EMF Academy, then you’ve heard me recommending EMF meters quite often, and I promise it’s for good reason. A good EMF meter like the TriField TF2 (read my review) measure all three types of EMF radiation, electric field, magnetic field, and radio frequency.
Just an aside, if you don’t already know the danger and harm that long-term exposure to EMF radiation causes, I’d encourage you to look around EMF Academy a bit, but for the purposes of this article, suffice it to say that it is a real and true danger that you should be concerned with.
An EMF meter will help you to not only understand the various types of EMF radiation you have in your home, but also the amount they are emitting. Not only that, but without an EMF meter, it is nearly impossible to know if the steps you are taking to reduce EMF radiation in your life are in fact working.
As an example, I’ve written up an enormous guide on how to reduce radiation in your entire house. However, if you don’t have an EMF meter, it’s hard to know how much many of the solutions I recommend are actually benefiting your home.
On top of that, there are actually some fairly good products on the market that help with EMF Radiation (careful, there are also many scam products). For example, SafeSleeve (see my review of their products) makes some fantastic EMF shielding cases for cell phones, tablets, and laptops.
With an EMF meter, you can actually see the difference the case is making. Simply have the case open, make a phone call, see the reading on your EMF meter, and then close the case and see the difference.
I won’t list all of the ways you can use a good EMF meter, but suffice it to say the possibilities are almost endless. Also, it’s actually kind of fun (and a bit scary) to walk around your home and office and be able to better understand how much EMF radiation various devices are emitting.
The apps I’ll talk about below in the “5 Best Apps For Detecting EMFs” section will help in some ways with reading EMF radiation, but they are by no means a replacement for a real EMF meter like my favorite, the TriField TF2.
I also just want to quickly mention that if you’re worried about EMF radiation from things like 5G, cellphones, routers, or anythhing else, there is an E-book that I absolutely cannot recommend any higher called “The Non-Tinfoil Guide to EMFs” that I would really encourage you to check out. I didn’t write it, but it’s one of the absolute best resources available.
How Do EMF Meter Apps Work?
First of all, just to clarify, EMF detector apps do sort of work, in that you likely will get a spike in the reading when you approach something like your WiFi router, or a cell phone that is making a phone call, or even your laptop.
However, they are not in my experience very accurate at all. This is for a few reasons, first of all, the cell phone you are using is already radiating a fairly large amount of EMF radiation so that in and of itself will mess up your reading.
The way that apps give you spikes in the meter reading, is that since your phone communicates using radio frequency, the app can harness this to know when it is picking up other radio frequencies foreign from its own communications and display a reading.
Some phones and apps are also capable of harnessing the magnetometers on the phone to give you a magnetic field radiation reading. However, these magnetometers will often pick up on the earth’s magnetic field, as well as the phones, so again the reading is unlikely to be accurate.
I also want to say that if you care about the dangers of EMF radiation, getting an app to measure that radiation is just plain silly. Exposing yourself to excess radiation just to read radiation is completely counter-intuitive, and I would never recommend that someone use one of these apps to detect EMF radiation if they can simply purchase an EMF meter.
One of the only situations I can think of that it might be worth getting an app is if you have purchased something like an EMF protective sleeve or case for a phone or tablet, and want to know if it is working.
If you don’t have an EMF meter, the app should at least show a difference in the readings with the case on, and with the case off, if the product does indeed work. That is one scenario where it would make sense, but again, a real EMF meter will still absolutely be a better choice.
Ok, now that we’ve made it clear that although EMF detector and EMF meter apps are capable of detecting some EMF radiation, I do not recommend them except in very specific situations. You will always be better off just purchasing an EMF meter.
Let’s take a look at the available apps for detecting EMF radiation.
5 Best EMF Detector Apps
1. Electromagnetic Detector: EMF Scanner
Let’s start off by talking about one of the more popular EMF detector apps on the apple app store, EMF Scanner. I downloaded this app and used it for a while, and was surprised that it gave readings when it should. However, the readings did not match those I was receiving from my TriField TF2, despite the picture you see to the right.
Still, I was impressed that it was obviously at least reading that there was, in fact, radio frequency radiation in the area. Also, I will admit that after testing quite a few different devices, there were times that the readings were fairly close to what my own EMF meter was detecting.
Overall I found the app very easy to use and actually had fun playing with it. It is free to download, but there are some premium features you have to pay for.
Some of the other features you get with the app:
Allows you to keep a record of when you measured various readings, storing up to 100 records that you can look back on. This feature is nice if you’re trying to measure something over time.
Can be set to give you an audible alarm if readings over a certain amount are detected.
Can email your measurements
Overall I think this is probably the best EMF detector app, at least on the app store.
Alright now let’s take a look at probably the best app on the Android app marketplaces, Ultimate EMF Detector. It’s a fairly simple app, with a nice interface that is easy to use and understand.
Like many of the apps I mention here, it utilizes the magnetic sensor in your phone (the same one that runs the compass for your phone) to display readings of magnetic fields in a surprisingly accurate way.
Just a note, if you’re phone doesn’t have a magnetic sensor in it (i’d be surprised since just about any modern smartphone does) then it will not display any readings. So if you download the app (don’t worry, it’s free) and the display just sits on 0, then you’re phone simply won’t be able to utilize this app.
Now let’s talk about what you get in the free version, and what you get if you happen to want the pro version of this app.
Free Version:
Magnetic field readings in microTesla, Gauss, and milliGuass
Records the data which can then be transferred via a text file for use however you’d like
A button that keeps the screen on while using the app
Nice EMF meter display that has both a digital “needle” as well as a numerical output.
Pro Version:
Everything in the free version
No ads
Sound notifications for high or sudden readings
Various backgrounds and “skins” for the app

3. EMF Analyzer
I don’t have a ton to say about this app, it’s free but fairly basic. The app itself seems to be marketed a bit more towards ghost hunters and paranormal investigators, however, just like the other apps it utilizes the tri-axis magnetic sensor in your phone to interpret readings, which are then displayed in microtesla.
Some of its features include:
Real-time EMF readings
Strength bar that fills up you can see in the image
Audible notifier
Calibration that helps to remove background noise
A very simple user interface

4. Entity Sensor Pro – EMF Detector
This is another Gauss meter app, meaning it only detects magnetic field radiation. Also, this app is marketed primarily to detect “spirits, ghosts, and EVP.” It is also marketed primarily for entertainment purposes, so it says that readings may not be accurate.
Some of the features that make this a pretty good app for ghost hunters would be things like:
Automatically records EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomenon) while you’re taking readings
Displays both EMF readings and EVP data around you
This is another “Freemium” app, meaning it is free to download but gates some of the features for the paid version. Some of the paid features include:
Recording trigger option that will automatically start and stop recording of EMF and EVP
Media Enhancement that adds camera features, flashlight, higher quality audio recording, and immediate EVP playback.
Overall I sort of fun app, but certainly not something I would actually recommend if you care about the dangers of EMF radiation.

Ok, now at this point you may be saying two things to yourself:
Wait a minute, that was only 4 apps, this article promised 5
Wait another minute, all of those apps are Gauss meters, meaning they only measure magnetic field radiation, what about WiFi?
Well friends, let’s take care of both your questions.
There is one app on the market that I know of that actually measures EMF radiation emissions from WiFI such as your home router, cordless phones, cell phones etc.
So for our 5th app, let’s talk about it.
5. Best WiFI Radiation App – WiFi Exposure Meter
First, a video that gives a fantastic explanation of how the app works.
So now that you have a little better idea of how the app works, let’s talk about it a bit more. First of all, the developers of the app saw what we saw today, a gap in the market as far as a reliable way to measure WiFi exposure in your home using your smartphone. The app is simple to use and has some pretty exciting premium features.
In the free version, you can do just about everything you saw in the video. The biggest difference is that the paid version allows the measurements to be more calibrated and accurate.
The free version also has slightly fewer display options. Don’t be mistaken though, the free version will still allow you to obtain a ton of valuable information and is certainly worth downloading and trying out.
What does the paid version cost?
At the time of this writing, it costs just a little over $3.00 USD. As the developer put it “We wanted to offer a reliable WiFI radiation measurement for the price of a cup of coffee.”
The application uses volts per meter to display to the user. In the background, the app is actually measuring in dBm (Decibel/milliWatt) but is then converted into electrical field measurements.
Couple things to remember, this app is only designed to measure the WiFi protocols of 2.4 GHz and 5.2 GHz, so it will not read, for instance, the radiation coming from local cell towers, only from the router in your home and others.
The primary purpose of the app is too help you position the router in your home to minimize exposure without losing connection, which is a noble cause, however, I’d encourage you to check out my full article on WiFi Radiation for more significant tips on limiting your exposure.

Final Thoughts On The Best EMF Detector Apps
As you could probably tell as you read through this article, I believe that although these apps do serve some purpose, I almost never think they are worth downloading for the average person.
First of all, most of these apps only measure magnetic fields, but they don’t make that clear to the user.
So someone may download one of these apps and attempt to measure something that does not give off a magnetic field but does give off radiation from radio waves, and believe they are safe because their app did not measure it.
Also, these apps are counter-intuitive for the most part, because they encourage you to use your phone more, which is likely already your largest exposure to EMF radiation.
I would highly encourage anyone that is reading this article, and cares about the dangers of EMF radiation, to just get a real EMF meter like the TriField TF2 (read my review). With a meter like this, you will be able to get accurate readings from any kind of EMF radiation. It is also simple to use, highly informative, and won’t unnecessarily expose you to more EMF radiation.
